About Mountain West Music
Mountain West Music is an instrument rental and repair company specializing in woodwinds and brass. It is owned and operated by Dorian Antipa, a professional bassoonist with a DMA from the Hartt School (University of Hartford) and Band Instrument Repair degree from Minnesota State College, Southeast. He has also received additional instruction from bassoon repair specialist, Paul Nordby.

Mountain West Music offers comprehensive repair services from regular maintenance to custom work and everything in between. Dorian repairs instruments for all types of musicians: beginners, college students, and professionals. As a lifelong musician, advocate for arts access, and educator, Dorian endeavors to meet the equipment needs of student musicians so that they are set up for a positive learning and performing experience.

Repair Services
Mountain West Music services are available for the following instruments:

Regularly played instruments should ideally be serviced every year. For woodwind instruments, this means a Clean Oil Adjust (COA).
COA service includes:

complete disassembly of every moving part, including pinned keys as found primarily on flutes,
-
a thorough cleaning of the body and all mechanisms (chem clean for metal bodies as needed),
-
replacement of all bumper materials (corks, felts, teflon, etc.) as needed,
-
Reassembly
-
Leveling any leaking pads
-
Pad regulation as needed
-
Spring replacement and adjustment as needed
-
Light hand polishing as needed and possible with pads in place
-
Light bore oil for wooden body instruments
-
Pad replacement as required at additional cost per pad
-
Play test

Key fitting to restore tight tolerances and optimal action

Crack pinning and repair

Tone hole replacement (as required by a cracked body)

Bore oil immersion treatment
Regular maintenance for brass instruments includes a chem clean.
Chem clean service includes:
-
Complete disassembly of all moving parts
-
A dunk in the chem solution to remove scale and mineral buildup
-
Full washing and neutralizing of all parts
-
Inspection for damage and alignment with minor dent work included
-
Porting pistons or valves
-
Replacement of strings for rotors
-
Replacement of water key corks
-
Play test

Additional brass services include but not limited to:

Stress relief (couldn’t we all use a little of that?)

Cross hatch and cross grain piston repair

Trombone slide alignment

Soft and silver solder repairs

Metal patching
All work is completed in-house, woodwind padding is guaranteed for a year, and estimates are always free but require the instrument to be in the shop for a hands-on inspection.
Instrument Rentals
Mountain West Music will begin renting woodwinds and brass instruments for the 2025-2026 school year. Limited inventory may be available before August, 2025. Contact us to inquire about details.
